MS. RUBY NOEL HAS SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT KANSAS: HER OBSERVATIONS AND PERSPECTIVES ARE NOT ALL VIEWED THROUGH THE LENS OF SOMEONE WHO LIVES IN KANSAS; MEANING THAT HER ENVIRONMENT DOES NOT RE-STRICT HER ACCESS TO INFORMATION, BUT PERHAPS, MINORLY COLORS HER REACTIONS TO EVENTS, A SELF-NEGATING STATEMENT THAT SHE DEFENDS WITH A SHRUG AND A ‘SKOSH.’

‘When in Kansas it is important to remember that the place is beholden to the same physical properties as any other parcel of land,’ instructs Ms. Ruby Noel, though parcel seems inappropriate to the scape of flat white plains I am staring at on my computer screen. ‘We got our borders. We have the northern, southern, eastern, and western,' she says. 'We’re fenced in like the rest of yawl.’ There are no borders. It is noontime and there seems to be no direction. I’m scanning my Retina screen for signs of life in the distance. There is no distance. Nothing is far, and nothing is near.

Ruby Noel lives in Western Kansas. She speaks without a drawl, except when she affects one; ‘We have the northern, we have the southern…’. But now and then a ‘skosh’ will sneak into her ramblings and she reveals herself to belong to the great expanse of America that sprawls between California and New York.

Ms. Noel is a writer by trade, a photographer by happenstance, and a cockeyed optimist, which she will tell you is necessary to survival in the Midwest. She embraces the roll cheerfully, for you see, Ms. Ruby Noel is no ordinary creature adapting to her environment. She is not taking shelter. She does not wish to turn the color of the flatland and hide. She wishes instead to be noticed so she might change the world by measures through her work and daily interactions by helping others see the plain’s infinitesimal, beautiful details.

Oh Boy Artifacts asked if she had copped the ‘infinitesimal beauty’ thing from our website and Ms. Noel said no so we figured, having that in common, we’d give her a box of chocolates, a notebook, and forum to spread her gospel.
